Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

'NUFF SAID! NEWS FROM SAN DIEGO COMICON 2012

Well, I didn't get to go to San Diego for this year's comicon either.  After eagerly awaiting and processing all the major announcements that pour out of comicon this time every year, here is what we all have to look forward to in the coming year.

MOVIES:  The comic book inspired movies don't seem to be slowing down.  Marvel announced the sequels to both Captain America, Thor and Iron Man.  IRON MAN 3 (EXTREMIS?) opens on May 3rd 2013; followed by THOR THE DARK WORLD on November 8th 2013 and CAPTAIN AMERICA:  THE WINTER SOLDIER on April 14th 2014.  Also lined up for the summer of 2014 is a GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movie, likely tying into the end credits of the AVENGERS movie and an ANT-MAN movie directed by Edgar Wright and hopefully starring Simon Pegg.  Not to be out done, DC will attempt to smash box office records and re-establish the SUPERMAN franchise with THE MAN OF STEEL on June 14th 2013.

COMICS - Probably the biggest announcement was from Neil Gaiman, who will return to DC/VERTIGO with another installment of THE SANDMAN illustrated by J.H. Williams III.    Checkout the YouTube clip below for Gaiman's official announcement.

Mike Mignola and Dark Horse hit us with a new HELLBOY series on Dec. 5th of this year with HELLBOY IN HELL.  What happens to Hellboy now he's dead?

Hellboy in Hell #1

To coincide with the 35th anniversary in Sept. and release of the movie; 2000 AD joins forces with Duane Swierczynski and Nelson Daniel of IDW publishing to bring us an on going JUDGE DREDD book.

Last but not least.  Image Comics really stepped up to the plate with tons of new series to watch out for.  With the quality books Image has been putting out lately like:  FATALE, MANHATTAN PROJECTS, SECRET and HAPPY; it is really good to see them capitalize on their recent successes.  Below are the books that seem the most promising.

  • Clone, Skybound's newest addition, from David Schulner and Juan Jose Ryp

  • Lazarus, a bleak sci-fi series, from Greg Rucka and Michael Lark

  • Nowhere Men from Eric Stephenson and Nate Bellgarde, telling a story that focuses on scientists in a world that puts them on a pedastal as celebrities

  • Oliver, a steampunk take on Oliver Twist, from Darick Robertson and Gary Whitta (Book of Eli)

  • Pretty Deadly, a Western series dealing with assassins, from Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios

  • Reign from Chris Roberson

  • Satellite Sam, a new mystery title, from Matt Fraction and Howard Chaykin

  • Sex from Joe Casey and Peter Kowalski

  • The Bounce by Joe Casy and David Messina

  • Have to get myself to San Diego next year and experience some of the amazing announcements that are made first hand.

LIVE IT LIKE YOU LOVE IT!
