'NUFF SAID - CAPTAIN AMERICA MUST READS!

This will be the first post on the graphic novels you should read for Marvel's BIG 3 (2 more to follow).  If you don't know who the BIG 3 are, you will find out soon enough. 
Well, with Cap, I find the best graphic novels and comics have been from the last 5 years or so, because of Ed Brubaker.  Brubaker has taken this character into the proper story-telling that Cap deserves, because quite honestly, prior to Brubaker there was just way to much cheesy crap.  Personally, Cap did not enjoy the most creativity as a character through the 80s and 90s.  Even when he was created by Jack Kirby just prior to the American involvement in WWII (Captain America Comics #1 March, 1941) it was serialized comic strips contained in the traditional comic book format, that were mostly propaganda to ease Americans into the idea of going to war (Pearl Harbour did not occur until Dec. 1941 and America had still been selling oil exports to Japan until the end of 1941).  The classic image of Cap punching Hitler was printed well before there was any inkling of American involvement in Europe let alone the tragedy that would unfold at Pearl Harbour.  It wasn't until Stan Lee had the Avengers find Captain America in the iceberg did he receive his first proper comic book (Astonishing Tales became Captain America at issue #100).

01 - CAPTAIN AMERICA:  WINTER SOLDIER ULTIMATE COLLECTION

 A midnight call to duty brings Captain America aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D Heli-carrier to identify the corpse of his most feared adversary: the Red Skull! 03 - CAPTAIN AMERICA:  TRUTH - RED, WHITE & BLACK

In every war, people demand their champion. In World War II, that hero was Captain America. TOP 10 - GAY COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS

This TOP 10 is dedicated to all my friends in the LGBT community. 

Some of these characters are controversial, because their origins may have stereotypes or were intended to by stereotypical from the get go and at one time may have been negative.  ie:  Rawhide Kid.  My point with this list is that for bad or good intentions, there have always been LGBT characters in comic books and there has definitely been a strong evolution from comic writers to break silly stereotypes and understand these characters as a representation of our society.  Though there are still a few writers out there that need a little education.  There are a lot of comparisons with the evolution of gay characters now, to how stereotypical black characters were in the 60s and 70s.  Now we have a black character as the leader of SHIELD and the Avengers. It always seems to be 'baby steps" but we're getting there.  I also wanted to highlight the existing gay characters currently in monogamous relationships.  My hat really goes off to those writers who have suffered through death threats (like the creators of Batwoman) in an  effort to realistically portray our world and how important the gay community is.  In comic books anything should be possible or we really have nothing at all as comic fans.

01 - BATWOMAN (KATE KANE), FIRST APPEARANCE 52 (2006) DC COMICS.

 

02 - NORTHSTAR (JEAN-PAUL BEAUBIER), FIRST APPEARANCE MARVEL'S UNCANNY X-MEN #120 (1979) and came out in 1992. John Byrne the creator of the character fought vigorously to have the character be openly gay, but The Comics Code Authority would not allow openly gay characters in comics until 1992.   Byrne always made sure there were strong hints and suggestions though.

03 - WILLOW (WILLOW ROSENBERG), FIRST APPEARANCE DARK HORSE'S BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (T.V 1997, COMICS 2007)

04 - KEVIN KELLER, FIRST APPEARANCE ARCHIE COMICS 2010.

05 - RENEE MONTOYA (THE QUESTION), FIRST APPEARANCE DC'S BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES (1992) AND BATMAN COMICS (1992).  FIRST APPEARANCE AS THE QUESTION (2006). 

06 - APOLLO & MIDNIGHTER - FIRST APPEARANCE 1998 WILDSTORM COMICS.  One of the first gay married couples in comics.  Unfortunately we didnt' get to see a wedding.  Maybe we will see a wedding in the DC NEW 52.

07 - ULTIMATE COLOSSUS (Peter Rasputin) - FIRST APPEARANCE MARVEL'S ULTIMATE X-MEN (2000).

08 - RAWHIDE KID (JOHNNY BART)- FIRST APPEARANCE ATLAS COMICS (1955).  FIRST APPEARANCE AS AN OPENLY GAY CHARACTER (2003).

09 - RICTOR & SHATTERSTAR - FIRST APPEARANCE OF RICTOR IN MARVEL COMICS X-FACTOR (1987).  FIRST APPEARANCE OF SHATTERSTAR IN NEW MUTANTS (1991).  In 2009 Rictor and Shatterstar shared the first same sex kiss in a mainstream Marvel publication and have been openly gay since.

10 - HULKLING & WICCAN - FIRST APPEARANCE MARVEL'S YOUNG AVENGERS (2005). 

Characters I wanted to include:  ANOLE (X-MEN), KARMA (NEW MUTANTS), several Watchmen characters including the original NIGHT OWL, MOONDRAGON, OSIDIAN (Son of Green Lantern Alan Scott), PHYLA-VELL and BRIAN FALSWORTH THE 2ND UNION JACK.
