Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, I'M ONLY READING! NEW COMICS FROM 06.13.2012 & 06.20.2012

"NOW THAT'S A COMIC BOOK," "STICK WITH IT," and "WHY'D I BUY THAT?" Comments on new comics that were shipped on 06.13.2012 & 06.20.2012.  Had to combine two weeks as there wasn't enough comics from the former and too many from the latter.  However, the needle for quality comics was in the red and broke off for these weeks.  For this week:  the Phoenix Five, the sleeper hit of the Before Watchmen ltd series and it's great to have Vaughan and Wood back writing books of such quality at the same time.

NOW THAT'S A COMIC BOOK!

AVENGERS VS X-MEN #06 of 12
ROUND 6 - Hickman/Coipel/Morales/Martin - Chapter 2 of AVSX begins with Jonathan Hickman taking the reigns and reshaping the Marvel U.  This series is really taking off now and Olivier Coipel could not arrive to illustrate at a better time.  Such a jump in quality illustrations from Romita to Coipel.  On a small side note, finally an artist for this ltd series and tie-ins is depicting Beast the way he should look now and not the way he looked in the 70s.  Can't wait for what comes next!

CYCLOPS:  "I've finally figured out why...  it's them.  Men know that regardless of their endless sins against mutants, their heroes will protect them.  They will do what their leaders think needs to be done.  I will tolerate it no longer, Emma.  It changes now.  No more Avengers."

BEFORE WATCHMEN:  SILK SPECTRE #1 of 4
MEAN GOODBYE - Cooke/Conner/Mounts - Wasn't expecting much for this chapter of the Before Watchmen saga, except it would be good because of Darwyn Cooke and would contain a pivotal chapter in the Curse of the Crimson Corsair.  This book is the sleeper hit of Before Watchmen and is essential.  Cooke and Conner have combined to produce an amazing read.  Minutemen and this title have already been masterpieces after only 1 issue.

"They hide things from children.  Try to protect them from the truth.  Keep them in a pretty bubble, where none of the ugliness can reach.  But kids are smarter than we think.  They may not comprehend the words, but they can hear the way they're delivered.  They try to hold on to the illusion, but it's hard to ignore all the hatred and yelling.  Especially when it is turned toward them."

BEFORE WATCHMEN: COMEDIAN #1 of 4
SMILE - Azzarello/Jones - For those of you who are fans of "gimp" masks, the "gimp mask" has yet to appear, but Azzarello as usual is awesome.  Very pleased to see the illustrations of J.G Jones again at D.C.  Who knew Jackie Kennedy was so evil?  Love where this is going.  Azzarello and Jones will do the Comedian justice with this ltd series.

JACKIE KENNEDY:  "And that blonde bitch, drugged out of her mind...  Do you know what her tongue is like?  It's loose, isn't it?  I understand you're not an idealist...  But I think you know what has to be done, Eddie."

CASANOVA AVARITIA IV
RELAXED IN PERSON - Fraction//Ba/Peter - The best book that Matt Fraction has written, writes or will continue to write.  This is what would happen if DC Comics, Marvel Comics, James Bond films and Star Wars hooked up and had a baby that was a comic book.  Can't wait for Acedia in Sept.
"The pain of the past in its pastness converts to the future tense of joy."

DAREDEVIL #14
DAMNED IF YOU DO...  DAMNED IF YOU DON'T...  - Waid/Samnee/Rodriguez - Daredevil almost meets Dr. Doom and Waid continues to put DD through his paces unlike any writer before.  Will Matt Murdock finally crack as he's stranded in Latveria?  Samnee's illustrations are really starting to suit this series and matches Mark Waid's style perfectly.  Favourite Marvel read every month.

DD:  "I was teleported here from Avengers mansion at around nine in the morning.  The cuckoo is seven hours ahead...  ...which, since the feel of humidity in the air is consistent with summer, not winter...  puts me not in Africa but in Europe.  Trace scents.  Rosa Canina and Globe Daisies.  A whiff of Aanthus Hungaricus.  All native to the Romanian...  area...  Oh dear God.  I know where I am.  They call me the Man Without Fear.  That's about to be put to the test."

THE MASSIVE #1
PART ONE OF THREE LANDFALL "KAMCHATKA" - Wood/Donaldson/Stewart - Brian Wood is back with another classic tale of a post-apocalyptic world.  The Earth has suffered a series of natural disasters and drowns.  The crew of Kapital sets in search of it's sister ship the Massive in a world deemed post CRASH.  James Bond meets Whale Wars.  Wood and Donaldson have already created some memorable characters and landscapes with this first must read issue.

"November 29, the Ninth Wave conservation ship Kapital reported that it lost contact with it's sister ship the Massive in heavy seas.  It remains missing to this day.  Having run at four knots for the better part of two weeks, the Kapital limped into Hong Kong's harbor, critically low on fuel, fresh water and food.  It's crew was shattered.  The ports no lay beneath meters of ocean.  Hong Kong was hit particularly hard by the events of the crash, but at a distance appeared to be a viable alternative.  The only alternative at this point.  In the first week of December of the year of the crash, the Ninth Wave trawler Kapital entered the city of Hong Kong, now drowning under ten stories of water."

SAGA #4
CHAPTER 4 - Vaughan/Staples - A vibrant world and read only Brian K. Vaughan can imagine and then produce.  Sticking with this book for the long haul and it will well be worth it.

"The Will wasn't the first bounty hunter to come after my parents and he wasn't the last.  Like every Freelancer I had the misfortune to eventually meet, he was a fucking monster.  But as my family was about to learn, some monsters are worse than others...
