Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

'NUFF SAID - CAPTAIN AMERICA MUST READS!

This will be the first post on the graphic novels you should read for Marvel's BIG 3 (2 more to follow).  If you don't know who the BIG 3 are, you will find out soon enough.
Well, with Cap, I find the best graphic novels and comics have been from the last 5 years or so, because of Ed Brubaker.  Brubaker has taken this character into the proper story-telling that Cap deserves, because quite honestly, prior to Brubaker there was just way to much cheesy crap.  Personally, Cap did not enjoy the most creativity as a character through the 80s and 90s.  Even when he was created by Jack Kirby just prior to the American involvement in WWII (Captain America Comics #1 March, 1941) it was serialized comic strips contained in the traditional comic book format, that were mostly propaganda to ease Americans into the idea of going to war (Pearl Harbour did not occur until Dec. 1941 and America had still been selling oil exports to Japan until the end of 1941).  The classic image of Cap punching Hitler was printed well before there was any inkling of American involvement in Europe let alone the tragedy that would unfold at Pearl Harbour.  It wasn't until Stan Lee had the Avengers find Captain America in the iceberg did he receive his first proper comic book (Astonishing Tales became Captain America at issue #100).

01 - CAPTAIN AMERICA:  WINTER SOLDIER ULTIMATE COLLECTION
Captain America: Winter Soldier Ultimate Collection #1 - Comic Book Cover
A midnight call to duty brings Captain America aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D Heli-carrier to identify the corpse of his most feared adversary: the Red Skull! The shocking murder of Cap’s oldest enemy may not be the end of the Skull’s plans, however, because whoever shot the Skull has stolen his final project: an unfinished Cosmic Cube with the potential power to alter reality itself. Adding to the imminent danger, a cadre of the Skull’s followers has already set in motion a plan to ignite bombs in the hearts of Paris, London and Manhattan – causing untold death and destruction. Racing against these bombs’ rapidly ticking clocks, the Star-Spangled Avenger must not only solve the mystery of his nemesis’ murder, but find the Cube before it can be used in the Red Skull’s malevolent plot against the United States! Then, the questions plaguing Captain America's dreams and memories have been answered in the most brutal way possible. And in the wake of this brutality, General Lukin makes his first all-out assault – tearing open old wounds and threatening to make new scars that will never heal! Collecting CAPTAIN AMERICA #1-9 & #11-14.

02 - CAPTAIN AMERICA:  THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN AMERICA
Captain America: The Death of Captain America, Volume 1: The Death of the Dream
The death of Captain America! Leaping from the final pages of Civil War, this is the biggest Cap story that Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting have yet to tell - guaranteed to stun readers and send shock waves through the entire Marvel Universe for the next year! As repercussions ripple outward, the Winter Soldier finally chooses a side, after the Civil War has ended - his own. But what are the Red Skull and his minions up to behind the scenes? Collects Captain America #25-30.

03 - CAPTAIN AMERICA:  TRUTH - RED, WHITE & BLACK

An epic spanning the time just before the attack on Pearl Harbor into the present day, TRUTH finally reveals the tragic sacrifice that a Black infantry unit made for their country - and what those sacrifices mean to a white man named Steve Rogers. Collects TRUTH #1-7.
04 - CAPTAIN AMERICA:  THE CAPTAIN
When Steve Rogers refuses to become a government operative, he is stripped of his uniform, title and shield, and a new Captain America is born!
