Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, I'M ONLY READING! NEW COMICS FOR 03.14.2012

The NOW THAT'S A COMIC BOOK, OK.... THERE'S SOMETHING HERE and WHY'D I BUY THAT? reviews of new comics that were shipped on 03.14.2012.  O.K, finally caught up on my reads.  For this week:  the FF reunite, Vaughan begins another masterpiece and the disappointment that is GREEN LANTERN.  Sometimes it hurts to be a fan.  Here we go!

NOW THAT'S A COMIC BOOK!

FANTASTIC FOUR #604
Jonathan Hickman concludes his FF epic story line, 3 years in the making.  This has been the greatest run on FANTASTIC FOUR in a generation.  If you missed it, grab every FANTASTIC FOUR graphic novel with Mr. Hickman's name on it.  Jonathan Hickman is the next Alan Moore and his career is just beginning.

SAGA #1
When Brian K. Vaughan writes a new comic, just pick it up.  SAGA is another soon to be masterpiece Vaughan can add to his repertoire of:  PRIDE OF BAGHAD, Y THE LAST MAN, EX MACHINA and the t.v series LOST.  When Brian K. Vaughan writes a new comic, just pick it up.

OK...  THERE'S SOMETHING HERE

BATWOMAN #7
There is a high degree of sophistication going on in this book.  Amy Reeder's artwork is growing on me by the issue and she is definitely an artist to look out for.  The plot and story are amazing and continue to build beautifully, however the dialogue began to get a little "corny" towards the end for Batwoman.  Think it is best to keep in mind this book is not supposed to be about lame super heroics.  I'm supporting this book for the long haul.

WHY'D I BUY THAT?

BATMAN & ROBIN #7
Way too blood thirsty.  Damien is a really good character but the levels Tomasi has taken this young child is kind of disturbing.  There needs to be a strong balance and almost counter weight relationship between Batman & Robin.  Batman & Robin meet Kick-Ass.  The writing of this book basically makes Batman an accessory to multiple murders.  Don't really understand how a character built on "don't kill no matter what" morals puts up with the body count Robin has.  I don't mind violence in a book when it has it's place and context but between Tomasi's GREEN LANTERN CORPS and this title all he must see is red when he is writing these story lines.  Tomasi is a great writer and Patrick Gleason one of my favourite aritsts, it just seems it's been a little bloody recently.  Robin has always been a gateway character for kids to get into the Batman universe and that has clearly been forgotten.

GREEN LANTERN #7
I can no longer support this book.  I am a huge fan of what Geoff Johns did with GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH and the GREEN LANTERN series up to and including BLACKEST NIGHT.  3 years later and the title that should be the flagship of the DCU is redundant and so bogged down in the past and the silver age, I don't care anymore.  This title should have had a new direction and fresh stories instead of the uninspired WAR OF THE GREEN LANTERNS and whatever has happend since.  Enough build up already.

LIVE IT LIKE YOU LOVE IT!
