Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING TP BOOK 1
"One of my favourite comic runs ever!  The best horror comic series by far and the basis of most of Alan Moore's work to follow.  Watchmen would not have been possible if Moore had not written this first."  Dale Bryans

From 1983 through 1987, a young British writer named Alan Moore revolutionized the American comic book. His groundbreaking tenure on DC Comics' SWAMP THING set new standards for graphic storytelling and touched off a revolution in the medium that is still expanding today. Building on the title's framework of gothic horror with a remarkably intuitive narrative style and an unprecedented depth of characterization, Moore's vision was realized through the hauntingly beautiful artwork of such collaborators as Stephen Bissette, John Totleben, Dan Day and Rick Veitch. The result is one of comics' most enduring masterpieces.
Now, for the first time, Moore's entire run — including his never-before-reprinted debut issue — is available in archival hardcover editions. This first volume, collecting issues 20-27 of THE SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING, also features a foreword by famed horror author Ramsey Campbell and a new introduction by Swamp Thing co-creator and original series editor Len Wein.

The Avengers and X-Men have learned that the all-powerful embodiment of both death and rebirth known as the Phoenix Force is on a crash course for Earth…and it needs a new host to unleash its immeasurable power. The critically acclaimed creative team of LANDRY Q. WALKER and ERIC JONES (Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures In the 8th Grade, Batman: Brave and the Bold) reunite to tell the apocalyptic tale of these titanic teens.

VOLTRON YEAR ONE #1

Before they were known as the legendary Voltron Force, they were Space Explorer Squadron #686 of the Galaxy Alliance -- four young men, led by Commander Sven, and tasked with keeping the Earth safe and the skies clear in a universe growing more and more dangerous every day. So it was no surprise that central command came to them first with an impossible rescue mission and an enemy even they didn't truly understand. One that threatens the fragile coalition of planets they've risked their lives to maintain. Unbreakable bonds are formed and intense rivalries borne in the first chapter of "Fearless Leader"...
