Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

TOP 10 - DC TITLES ED BRUBAKER SHOULD WRITE

By now you've probably heard Ed Brubaker is leaving Marvel Comics after an unprecedented run on Captain America.  Siting a "burn out" on super hero comics and more likely deciding to bow out on a high as Marvel resets everything, Brubaker leaves a legend.  Unfortunately, I personally believe Ed had a lot of unfinished business with Cap, but Marvel editorial can be a bitch sometimes.  We never did find out what happened to Steve's baby Sharon was pregnant with or to the Red Skull's mind trapped in one Armin Zola's androids.  Brubaker has expressed a desire to concentrate on his creator owned works like Fatale, which is still plenty of reason to be excited about the stories this man still has to tell.  Fatale has been my favourite Brubaker comic since it's first issue.  However, Brubaker is one of the best writers in super hero comics going. Why else does he win best writer year in and year out?   So, if he were to hypothetically return to DC Comics, here are the titles he should helm.

01 - GREEN LANTERN - The Lanterns are space cops and Brubaker knows cop drama like nobody else.  Actually having the GLs dong what their supposed to instead of all this different coloured ring crap.  What a novel idea.

02 - DOOM PATROL - Eagerly been awaiting the appearance of the Doom Patrol in the DC new 52.  The thought of Brubaker writing Oolong island, Cliff Steel, Elasti-girl, The Chief (Dr. Niles Caulder) and Larry the Negative Man would blow my mind.

03 - DETECTIVE  COMICS - Snyder is too good on Batman, but why not have Brubaker return to the Batman line and have two heavy hitters.  He could bring back many of the characters featured in his Batman and Gotham Central run.  Detective does not just concentrate on Bruce all the time.  We would probably get a more expansive take on all the characters of Gotham City.

04 - THE FLASH - Manapul has done a superb job with his run on this title, but like many writers of Flash they over look his detective skills.  Would love to see the Flash in a gritty crime epic.

05 - BATWOMAN - Created by his buddy Rucka.  If we can't have Rucka bring in the other mastermind of Gotham Central to further expand on the run.  Brubaker paired with J.H Williams III would be brilliant.

06 - HELLBLAZER - Every great writer should have a go at John Constantine. Plus, Brubaker is kind of stomping in Constantine territory already with Fatale.  Or maybe that's a reason not to have him on this title.  I for one would love to see John under the pen of Ed.

07 - SUPERMAN - Grant Morrison has really brought back the essence of Superman in Action Comics with his nose to the ground approach with Clark.  Like with Flash, a Superman murder/mystery would be excellent for the character.  Superman is always to busy punching space aliens.  Let's see more of the reporter following leads and crime fighting.

08 - LEGION OF SUPER HEROES - Give Brubaker the entire 31st century and let him run wild.

09 - MARTIAN MANHUNTER - A new Martian Manhunter series is long over due and he's not as prominent in the DC NEW 52 under Stormwatch.  Again, another character whose intelligence and background as GCPD is always overlooked.

10 - JUSTICE LEAGUE - A completely unreadable comic for myself at the moment.  Brubaker could put it back to the heights JL reached with epics like Identity Crisis by Brad Meltzer (another incredible crime fiction writer).  Brubaker has written X-Men why not JL?

Anyway, just a bit of fun and food for thought on a rainy afternoon.  Unfortunately, these are but pipe dreams and it is very unlikely Ed Brubaker would ever surface at DC again as he has been overly critical of their Before Watchmen initiative.  I love Ed Brubaker as a writer and will be pleased with whatever he chooses to do next.  If we get more creator owned works like Fatale, Criminal and Incognito everybody wins!

LIVE IT LIKE YOU LOVE IT!
