Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

TOP 10 - AVENGERS VS X-MEN 'BOUTS I WANT TO SEE!

This week mark's the first issue of the next epic Marvel event, AVENGERS VS X-MEN.  I've always been more interested in the X-Men rather than the Avengers, so this event leads us back to those childhood days arguing over which super hero would win a battle against another super hero, because chances were it was never going to happen.  It was just completely mind boggling being a kid when the good guys would have to clash for whatever reason.  The world's a much more ideological place to be in the 21st century as compared to the 80s or even 90s and those black and white lines have faded to a dull grey.  So, AVENGERS VS X-MEN gives us an opportunity to relive simpler comic times, plus there hasn't been anything descent done with the Phoenix since Chris Claremont's legendary X-Men run.  Let's have some fun.  I'm taking the X-Men over the government tools that make up the Avengers.  Will Spider-Man switch sides? He's not a mutant but just as an outsider.  Here is my list of the 'bouts I want to see as a Marvel fan and who would win.  Discuss, enjoy and get geeky!

Winner of the 'bout in RED.  IN THIS CORNERRRRRRR......

01 - CAPTAIN AMERICA VS WOLVERINE - (you know Wolverine will switch sides back to the X-Men and this is probably the fight that will end the series.  Much like the climax of CIVIL WAR where Iron Man and Cap fought).

02 - CAPTAIN AMERICA VS CYCLOPS (Of course the two leaders need to clash.  Cyclops has come along way from the lame boyscout and is definitely one of the most tactical and badass characters in the Marvel U.  He's the Nick Fury of the X-Men and the younger version of Steve.  Cyclops does whatever is necessary, while to Steve the means do not justify the end).

03 - CYCLOPS VS WOLVERINE - (The rematch from X-Men Schism.  Marvel has turned Wolverine into a giant Disney tool, so it's about time Wolvie was put in his place.  Remember when he was 5' 3", drank and smoked a cigar?  Is he even Canadian still?).

04 - SPIDER-MAN VS DEADPOOL - (Has this ever happened? Take Spidey in a heartbeat).

05 - IRON MAN VS NAMOR the SUB-MARINER - (Both had flings with Emma and though I'm not an Iron Man fan, he'll come out on top after a vicious beating from Namor.  Liking Namor more and more though in the pages of DEFENDERS and UNCANNY X-MEN).

06 - THOR VS THE JUGGERNAUT A.K.A COLOSSUS - (Thor always gets back up, so this tilt goes to the God of Thunder).

07 - IRON FIST VS PSYLOCKE - (Iron Fist is the better ninja and apparently his power is derived from part of the Phoenix force).

08 - ROGUE VS MS MARVEL - (The history between these characters goes all the way back to the beginning of the 80s when Rogue stole Carol Danvers powers, rendering Carol into a coma for the best part of a couple of decades in real comic time).

09 - BEAST VS ICEMAN - (Avenger/X-Man vs X-Man.  Never under estimate Bobby Drake).

10 - STORM VS EMMA FROST - (Storm is both an Avenger and X-Man and these two just don't get along.  Never bet against Emma Frost).

HONOURABLE MENTION:  (HOPE VS RACHEL SUMMERS), (CAPTAIN BRITAIN VS FANTOMEX), (MAGNETO VS THOR), (THING VS NAMOR), (HAWKEYE VS GAMBIT), (RED HULK VS COLOSSUS), (SPIDEY VS WOLVIE) AND (BLACK WIDOW VS PSYLOCKE).
