Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, I'M ONLY READING! NEW COMICS SHIPPED ON 02.29.2012

The NOW THAT'S A COMIC BOOK, OK, THERE'S SOMETHING HERE and WHY'D I BUY THAT? reviews of new comics that were shipped on 02.29.2012. For this week: Risso and Azzarello expand their phonetic, dystopian future and universe building with the "Super Seven."

NOW THAT'S A COMIC BOOK!

SPACEMAN #4 OF 9
Praise for SPACEMAN:

"Insanely original." – AIN'T IT COOL NEWS"  Exceedingly impressive. Bleak...creepy." – io9"A snowball of excitement and tragedy all rolled into one great comic." – IGN"  If someone were to review the new Vertigo Comics series SPACEMAN in the future when the book is set, it might go something like this: 'Oh em gee. Vertigo duz it agin. Awsum.'" – USA TODAY/Comic Hub"  A richly realized creative world. . . an immediately engaging central character. . . strong, confident story-telling." – ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY/Shelf Life"  SPACEMAN #1 is obviously a 'must buy.' Azzarello's playful¬ness with language is taken to a whole new level here. Rating 4.5/5 stars." – COMIC BOOK RESOURCES  On the run and running out of time, Orson's life can't get any worse – until a bounty hunter gets on his tail. Trouble is, this ain't no ordinary detective. He's a spaceman, too.   Don't miss the series that H.G. Wells calls "the comic I wish I was alive to read!"

OK, THERE'S SOMETHING HERE

JUSTICE LEAGUE #6
JUSTICE LEAGUE PART SIX - Have not been overly impressed with the first 6 issues of JL, but it is the #1 selling comic in the world.  As as result, it is designed to appeal to the new fan and the mainstream.  This is the set-up book for DC, so there's not a lot room here for depth outside of a giant beat down.  However, like ACTION COMICS we are seeing a teasing of universe building with this issue.
When Superman is being tortured by Desaad and speaks of seeing Darkseid's atrocities against the multiverse, I believe he sees a glimpse of his EARTH 2 self.  This would make a lot of sense with the upcoming series EARTH 2 by James Robinson, where we will see the Earth the JSA are originally from pre CRISIS along with Huntress (recently had a ltd series) who is the daughter of Bruce Wayne and Selena Kyle from that Earth, Dick Grayson as Batman, Powergirl (who is the older version of Supergirl from Earth 2) and a much different Superman, as Lois Lane has died.  I believe she will have perished during Darkseid's attack on Earth 2 before his attempted conquest of this Earth 1 in the first six issues of JUSTICE LEAGUE.
I strongly recommend readers re-read or pick up a copy of DC's CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS and check out the current ACTION COMICS, as I think we are seeing a return of the DCU to before CRISIS, which was the silver age of comics.  The absence now of the JSA from Earth 1 and the fact there is reference in the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE that Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman etc are the first super heroes on Earth 1 supports this claim.
The secondary story in this issue and the end of FLASHPOINT, also seems to support that this Pandora character (seen at the end of FLASHPOINT and in ever single #1 issue of the DC NEW 52 relaunch) is possibly manipulating or reversing the effects of the various CRISIS' (CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, ZERO HOUR, INFINITE CRISIS and FINAL CRISIS) on the DC multiverse.
A big bang is about to be let off in the DC NEW 52.  Enjoy!

Small week because of the leap year.  Back next week with more comic bookery!

Cheers for reading!
