Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

HP LOVECRAFT ILLUSTRATED CLASSICS - AT THE MOUNTAIN OF MADNESS
I am forced into speech because men of science have refused to follow my advice without knowing why.
H.P. Lovecraft''s terrifying horror story gets an illustrated interpretation by one of today''s finest graphic novel artists. Geologist William Dyer--the narrator of this novella--is desperate to stop a research team planning a journey to Antarctica. He himself led a disastrous mission there, only to discover evidence of blood-chilling evil from beyond Earth. Will the new expedition continue its plans? And what will happen if they go?
Once again, as he did in The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Hound of the Baskervilles, Ian N. J. Culbard has created an unforgettably powerful retelling of a classic tale.

THE COMPLETE TERMINAL CITY
Visionary designer and comics creator Dean Motter (Mister X, Electropolis, Batman: Nine Lives) returns with the purest expression to date of his patented retro futurism! Terminal City is a place where transistor-tube robots rub elbows with old-time gangsters, where bright, shiny technologies cast deep noir shadows.

Teaming Motter with celebrated artist Michael Lark (Daredevil, Gotham Central), this massive collection reprints the original series, along with its sequel, Terminal City: Aerial Graffiti!

* All fourteen issues of the classic series, collected for the first time!

* Eisner-and Harvey Award-nominated series!

"This is one of the best marriages of story and art I've seen in years and an absolute delight to read." -Alex Ross, artist of Marvels and Kingdom Come

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #1

"INFINITE OPPENHEIMERS"
What if the research and development department created to produce the first atomic bomb was a front for a series of other, more unusual, programs? What if the union of a generation's brightest minds was not a signal for optimism, but foreboding? What if everything... went wrong?
Welcome to THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, a brand new, ongoing, monthly comic from the creators of THE RED WING.
Brought to you by award-winning writer JONATHAN HICKMAN and possibly the best new talent of the year, NICK PITARRA, THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS is a look at history through a darker, much stranger, lens.

CHEERS FOR READING!
