Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

SNEAK PEEK - Weekly Previews for the week 02.29.2012

On a weekly basis you will find tidbits in this column about the week's comic releases.  ie:  issues not to miss during crossovers, comics that peak the interest and any type of miscellaneous details that might help with that week's purchases from your local comic shop etc.

Comics shipping week of 02.29.2012

MARVEL:

Pretty small week for Marvel for the Wed. falling on the leap year.  Marvel continues to offer free digital downloads for a select few titles with purchase.  The redemption code is underneath a peely sticker in the back of the issues, which I find lame.  Would prefer the issues bagged if you don't want people stealing redemption codes.  This week's comics with digital downloads are:

ULTIMATES #7

ULTIMATE X-MEN #8

DC:
If you were a fan of the BATMAN BEYOND cartoon and the recent limited series there is reason to rejoice.  Due to fan demand DC is publishing an ongoing series, BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED.  Debut of the Justice League Beyond!

BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #1

The first story arc of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's JUSTICE LEAGUE concludes with the battle we've been waiting 6 issues for.  Justice League Vs. Darkseid.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #6

Again, small week, but in the future I will spotlight one item from each comic company for every comic book Wed.

Cheers for reading!
