Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, I'M ONLY READING! NEW COMICS 01.25.2012

The QUALITY, POTENTIAL and RUBBISH for comics that were released 01.25.2012.

QUALITY

FANTASTIC FOUR #602
Simply one of the most epic FF and Marvel comics stories ever!  Kirby and Lee would even applaud the time and care that Hickman has put into the last 3 years worth of Fantastic Four.  It's all coming to ahead and "All Hope Lies In Doom."  The editors at Marvel need to do whatever it takes to keep Hickman and Kitson together on Fantastic Four for years to come.

THE FLASH #5
So impressed with the creator that Manapul has turned into.  This is the best comic written and drawn by the same person.  There's not too many creators that even attempt both duties at the same time anymore.  It takes exceptional talent and that is what this book is loaded with.  Co-plotting with the colourist, Brian Buccellato, gives us a book that is flawless in execution from top to bottom.  These guys are in trenched in what they are trying to accomplish and this is what super hero comics should be.  Green Lantern wishes it was this book right now.

SECRET AVENGERS #21.1
First off, I am not backing away from my stance that the point one Marvel titles are a rip off and unnecessary.  The stories are usually nothing but a precursor for what is yet to come.  We don't need extra comics when said point one issue's plot could easily be included in the regular numbering of whatever title you happen to enjoy.  This issue was awesome however, I just should have not had to buy an extra Secret Avengers.  The only reason I am still collecting this title after Warren Ellis' very under-rated run, was that Rick Remender from "Uncanny X-Force," was adding "Secret Avengers," to his resume.  "Dark Angel Saga," was one of the best X-Men story lines ever and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for us in "Secret Avengers."  Spoiler Alert:  He has brought Captain Britain into the fold, as he also included Cap in his follow up storyline over in Uncanny.  With "A vs X," approaching will there be a clash between X-Force and the Secret Avengers?  Fantomex vs Captain Britain?

POTENTIAL

SUPERMAN #5
George Perez's second last issue on Superman and the end to his first attempt at writing (I believe).  Apparently the writing duties have been bogging his artistic process down and having not enjoyed writing he is moving on to other DC projects.  Haven't seen any announcements on anything upcoming.  It would be great if he's a part of the Watchmen projects.  No one can pack as many characters into one panel like George.  With Superman though, I have to say he has written an enjoyable 5 issues so far.  Nothing blockbuster, but very solid and his attention to detail like his artwork is flawless.

RUBBISH

FF #14

After the Human Torch was killed and "Fantastic Four," was replaced by "FF#1."  This book was so good.   The good factor is still there, but it's gone back to the "Fantastic Four," when it returned with #600 (ended at #588 and then 12 issues of FF passed) giving us two books.  The story line still continues to be good, because it ties directly into events in "Fantastic Four," but the art is so terrible I'd rather just read "Fantastic Four," and fill in the gaps myself.  "FF," should have ended at issue #12 and then Marvel could have published "Fantastic Four," twice monthly with Epting and Kitson as the artists, as they continue to publish twice per month anyway.
Cheers for reading!
