Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, I'M ONLY READING! NEW COMICS 02.01.2012

The QUALITY, POTENTIAL and RUBBISH for comics that were shipped on 02.01.2012.  It's usually the end of the month that holds all the gems.  The beginning of Feb. was loaded with comic goodness.  We'll see if the rest of the month lives up to the first week.  Can't wait!

QUALITY

ACTION COMICS #6
Action Comics has been consistently in the top 3 of comic sales every month since the DC New 52 began in Sept.  This is the tip of the Iceberg.  What I think we will witness with this title is the repair of the the DC multi-verse from the damages wrought on it, because of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS way back in '85.  DC has taken a leaf from the STAR TREK movie franchise but in reverse.  Cannot wait for Morrison to start dealing with EARTH 2.  The ground work is all there from the last issue of FLASHPOINT, to these first 6 issues of ACTION COMICS.  Morrison used to write Dr. Who comics in the 80s, so I absolutely adored his reference to terrasect space.  Anyone who knows the TARDIS, knows what Morrison is referencing.

ANIMAL MAN #6
Buddy Baker is RED THUNDER.  ANIMAL MAN the movie.  The movie within a plot, within a comic book.  Jeff Lemire is the freshest thing to happen to comics in a long time.  Love the different perspectives and twists he has to offer with his plots.  You think he's going one way and then feints the other.  Evolve or Die.  Brilliant!

FATALE #1
The award winning and crime master Ed Brubaker's new independent book.  The best crime/espionage fiction writer on the planet merges dark, layered noir style, into a world of demons and chthulu cults.  If you like tommy gun wielding gangsters, cops on the take, demon worshippers and a beautiful woman who doesn't age, this is the best new series you can pick up.  I am surprised that this title is available through IMAGE COMICS and not ICON.  Usually, when one of the Marvel favourites writes something outside the super hero genre (Fraction's CASANOVA and all of Brubaker's CRIMINAL) it is released on the mature ICON label.  Are we witnessing the precursor to Brubaker leaving Marvel?

STORMWATCH #6
One of the most essential readings to the DC NEW 52 and you don't even know it yet!  This book is the DR. WHO of the DC universe, but with Martian Manhunter,  and the Midnighter.  I will miss Paul Cornell writing this book, but Peter Milligan coming on board has me ecstatic.  Get on this book!

WINTER SOLIDER #1

Wow.  What a great read.  Another gem from Ed Brubaker.  I was really pissed off with the way Marvel had been backing away from Brubaker's development of this character in the CAPTAIN AMERICA series and FEAR ITSELF.  Matt Fraction's treatment of Bucky Barnes in FEAR ITSELF was nothing short of hack work.  The WINTER SOLDIER story lines in Captain America over the last few years have been some of the best CAPTAIN AMERICA I have ever read.  Straight up espionage but with Steve Rogers and Bucky.  As usual, Marvel doesn't stick to their guns, but with Bucky I'm glad he hasn't stayed dead after FEAR ITSELF.  Putting the character back under the guidance of Brubaker should prove to give Marvel a must read title.  All indications after WINTER SOLDIER #1 are that espionage levels are set to awesome.

POTENTIAL

AVENGERS:  X-SANCTION #3 OF 4
A VS X in 2 months.  Hopefully, the biggest Avengers/X-Men crossover ever, has more depth to it than the advertisment for a Street Fighter style video game.  We don't need Civil War 2, but with the X-Men this time.  This series has brought up several good questions as to the "real" relationship between the Avengers and the X-Men.  We will shortly see what Aaron, Bendis, Brubaker and Hickman have in store for Marvel fans.

BATWING #6
This title has been steamrolling with action since the first issue and doesn't seem to be slowing down to catch it's breath. The pace is electric and the building of the African super hero community is a fresh and necessary addition to the DCU. Kudos to the writer and artist for crafting such an explosive and controversial read.

DEFENDERS #3
Very surprised and happy to see when this title was recently relaunched it was one of Marvel's best selling issues. Fraction writing the IRON FIST character again is a pleasure and hot off his MIGHTY THOR run Fraction also returns the SILVER SURFER to the DEFENDERS as a founding member. Fraction's take on the Surfer is classic. Love the little throw back page decorations from the ad style used in the DEFENDERS comics of the 70s. The references to Marvel comics of the 70s throughout this series so far, prove Fraction knows the mythology of Marvel and how to properly incorporate that mythology into new and dynamically layered plots.

RUBBISH

RED LANTERNS #6

Not Milligan's best work. I would have preferred DC taking him off this book instead of JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK. This book cannot succeed as a stand alone title without relying heavily on readers being aware of the last 4 years of GREEN LANTERN stories and the significance of Krona to the DCU. Atrocitus is an unbelievably deep character, so I wouldn't want him to disappear, but there should be more than enough space for him in all the other GL books. Too much involved back story in the RED LANTERN book to enjoy a smooth read. As well, the RED LANTERN cat Dex-Starr is actually the Red Lantern from Earth. There are too many inconsistencies in the GL books right now and it's getting out of control.
Cheers for reading!
