Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, I'M ONLY READING! NEW COMICS 11.16.2011

The QUALITY AND POTENTIAL for comics that were released 11.16.2011.  No CRAP this week.

QUALITY

BATMAN #3
This story line is getting better by the issue.  Like the ties to the recent "Batman: Gates of Gotham."  Which was also co-written by Scott Snyder.  Incorporating the 13th floor superstition and making effective use of it was amazing story telling.
ULTIMATE X-MEN #3
Love the new Ultimate line and X-Men is no exception.  Nick Spencer is really allowed to take the X-Men to places the regular Marvel U wouldn't dare.  Really uses the canon established through classic X-Men story lines like "Days of Future's Past" and "God Loves, Man Kills."

POTENTIAL

INCREDIBLE HULK #2
Never been a huge reader of the Incredible Hulk, but Aaron's first couple of issues seem to be headed somwhere worth going.  Banner is nuts.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #3
Not a very deep title and not as good as Mark Waids's "Justice League:  Year One."  However, each issue seems to be getting more fun.  Fun and Epic!  Like the JL should be.  Also, like the drop of America from the JL.  Never made sense that GL polices a space sector, yet on on particular planet only supports one country.

WONDER WOMAN #3
Another title getting better by the issue.  Azzarello is one of the best and he continues to prove his writing talents.  The only knock is the art unfortunately.  It's not bad in any sense, but doesn't match the crispness and directness of the story.  It's too WB.  Not that Risso should always be the artist for Azzarello, but I do think his art style would match the forboding and darkness that is slowly starting to build.
Cheers and thanks for reading!
