Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, I'M ONLY READING! NEW COMICS 11.09.2011

The QUALITY, POTENTIAL and CRAP from comics that shipped on 11.09.2011.  I have been finding myself picking up more Marvel titles as the disaster that was "Fear Itself" is over.  The BIG events are never as strong as the individual books throughout the year.  Interested to see what Marvel has planned for 2012, as DC has really upped the ante this past year and going into 2012.

QUALITY

BATMAN & ROBIN #3

Really enjoying the first 3 issues with Tomasi setting up a very dark father and son relationship between the dynamic duo.  Not as good as "Batwoman," but the best "Batman," title so far in the new 52.  Damien rocks this title as Robin.

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #631

Best character in the Marvel U right now is Kid Loki.  It is so right that the God of Mischief (Not evil as most assume) should be a 12 year old boy.  There are very few Marvel titles being written with this quality and the writing talents of Kieron Gillen continue to flourish.  Let's see if he can put "Uncanny X-Men," back to the top of the charts as well.

PUNISHERMAX #19

The problem I have always had with the Punisher.  How does a character like him, survive in the Marvel U?  "Punishermax," solves that question.  You take him away from all the super heroics and world conquerors and put the character in reality based, vigilante/crime fiction.  The depth that Aaron adds to this character drives this book.  It is not the over the top violence as with alot of Max line books.  It is the motivation of a man that can't stop.  The addition to Frank Castle's origin for the reason he was in the park with his family "that day" was incredible.  Spoiler Alert:  He wanted a divorce, because of what Vietnam turned him into.  It wasn't the park that turned Castle into Punisher, it was his tours of Nam.  His family was in the way of him becoming something else.

POTENTIAL

BATTLE SCARS #1 OF 6

One of the fallout series from "Fear Itself."  The other (not as promising looking) is "Fearless."  Quite enjoyed the first issue.  It is good when like when comic companies like Marvel and DC give a nod to service men and women.  This series introduces a new character, Army Ranger Marcus Jones (his Mom was murdered in the epilogue of Fear Itself #7 of 7).  Somehow he is tied into this "secret" that is bubbling in the Marvel U.  Captain America and Nick Fury seem to know who he is.

CRAP

GREEN LANTERN #3

Really pains me to put "Green Lantern," in the CRAP pile.  Geoff Johns has had a great run over the years, but his stories are waning.  Compared to DC comics like "Action Comics," "Swamp Thing," and "Animal Man" where the DC mythos is expanding, GL has been spinning it's wheels for 3 issues.  Sinestro is a GL again, which is fine, but it's the same old Hal is going to screw up again and will never be with Carol stories and doesn't know how to be a GL.  We've been here before and Johns needs to start doing something new, rather than barf up the past and hope we as comic readers haven't read what he's read.  He's done the same with Flash and Aquaman lately.  Hopefully, as this new GL series continues Johns can get back to the quality of his "Rebirth" and "Sinestro Corps War" story lines.  I'm a little worried though.  How does the writer of GL for the last 8 years consult on the GL movie and approve of that mess?  Johns needs to stop trying to help run a company and get back to concentrating on writing.

MARVEL POINT ONE (ONE SHOT)

Point one is the biggest cash grab in the history of comics.  If you are going to do sneak previews of what's ahead, do it in the annuals or maybe weave it into the storyline that is just ending to allude to what's next.  Having read point one issues for some titles and then Marvel has released another point one for said title, but the previous point one teaser hadn't even happened yet.  Point one titles are nothing.  And what about leaving things to surprise readers?  That's everything.  Read Previews if you want to know what lies ahead.  It costs $3.00 and you get the Marvel previews free.  Basically, this $6.00 way overpriced issue gave previews of the upcoming Phoenix event, "Scarlet Spider," an Ultron event that was alluded to in "Captain America Reborn," and "Defenders."  As well, it had no previews of what was going to happen in existing Marvel titles.  Marvel's just trying to get you to buy new crap #1 titles, because we needed another Spider-Man title about his CLONE.

Cheers and thanks for reading!
