Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

TOP 10: CONTEMPORARY COMIC BOOK WRITERS

Well, before I undertake my first TOP 10 list, I would like to state that these are my own personal opinions and completely subjective.  Please feel free to rant and rave if you don't agree or even submit your own TOP 10 in the comments section.  Also, before everyone's collective minds explode, I have not included Alan Moore, Frank Miller or Neil Gaiman on this list (they will appear on my TOP 10 writers of all time).  The reason being, they do not put out work on a regular basis anymore within the comics medium.  This list is comprised of writers that you can pick up new stories from your local comicshop every month and for each author I have listed the works I feel should be read by you.

01.  GRANT MORRISON - currently writing Batman Inc. & Action Comics (All-Star Superman, Final Crisis, Arkham Asylum, Batman R.I.P/Batman & Robin, New X-Men).

02.  JONATHAN HICKMAN- currently writing FF, S.H.I.E.L.D & Ultimates (Secret Warriors, the Nightly News, Pax Romana, Fantastic Four, Red Mass for Mars)

03.  BRIAN K. VAUGHAN - currently working on SAGA for Image (Y the Last Man, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways, Ex Machina, BTVS Season 8, Lost t.v series).

04.  BRIAN AZZARELLO - currently writing Flashpoint: Batman Knight of Vengeance & Wonder Woman (100 Bullets, Joker, Superman: For Tomorrow, Lex Luthor: Man of Steel).

05.  ROBERT KIRKMAN - currently writing Walking Dead, Super Dinosaur & Invincible (Battle Pope, Brit, Haunt, Marvel Zombies, the Astounding Wolf-Man).

06.  ED BRUBAKER - currently writing Criminal, Incognito & Captain America (Batman: the Man Who Laughs, Gotham Central, Daredevil, Immortal Iron Fist, Sandman presents:  Deadboy Detectives).

07.  MATT FRACTION - currently writing Fear Itself, Mighty Thor & Invincible Iron Man (Casanova, Immortal Iron Fist, Five Fists of Science, Thor, 30 Days of Night:  Bloodsucker Tales, Uncanny X-Men).

08.  GREG RUCKA - currently writing Punisher, Stumptown & Whiteout: Night (Detective Comics:  Batwoman, Gotham Central, Batman:  No Man's Land, Queen & Country, Whiteout).

09.  J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI - currently writing sequel to Superman:  Earth One & Samaritan X (Amazing Spider-Man, Thor, Brave & the Bold, Superman: Earth One, Babylon 5 t.v series).

10.  BRIAN WOOD - currently writing DMZ, Northlanders & Supernatural (DEMO, Channel Zero, Supermarket,  the New York Four, the New York Five).

Other Writers I enjoy:  Geoff Johns, Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning, Peter Milligan, Warren Ellis, Jeff Smith and Mark Millar.  I am a huge Alan Moore fan, so it was very hard to leave him off this list.  However, if Alan ever wants to stop bitching about the comics industry and try to make it better through his presence, I am all for it.  He hates the mainstream, but for all intents and purposes he is the mainstream or should at least feel responsible for it.  There is not a writer I mentioned in my TOP 10 that hasn't been influenced by him.
