Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

'NUFF SAID - THE MIGHTY THOR MUST READS!

This 2nd post on the graphic novels you should read for Marvel's BIG 3 (1 more to follow). If you don't know who the BIG 3 are, you will find out soon enough.  Or go see the Avengers movie.
Thor is arguably the character most responsible for the emergence of Marvel at the beginning of the 60s.  His mythological adventures in the pages of JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY as the Odinson and Donald Blake not only made that title #1 it was also written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby.  Thor would then evolve from the pages of Journey and find a home with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, when Stan and Jack put the AVENGERS book together.  As with Captain America this character has suffered through some pretty cheesy periods (70s, 90s, early 2000s) but with the help of some talented writers in J. Michael Strazynski and Matt Fraction, is back to top notch story telling.  Thor is once again a mainstream character enjoyed by males and females of all ages.  It is rumoured that fan favourite characters the Enchantress, the Executioner and Skurge will the the antagonists; as well as Loki in the sequel to the brilliant Thor movie.
