Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, I'M ONLY READING! NEW COMICS 05.09.2012

The NOW THAT'S A COMIC BOOK, STICK WITH IT and WHY'D I BUY THAT? reviews of new comics that were shipped on 05.09.2012.  For this week:  the Night of Owls takes Gotham, we learn more of Ed Brubaker's Fatale and Green Lantern continues to hit new lows; which makes this blogger a sad panda.

NOW THAT'S A COMIC BOOK!

BATMAN #9
NIGHT OF THE OWLS - The Court of Owls infiltrates the House of the Bat.  Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo continue to prove they are one of the best creative teams on this title ever.  What is even more interesting in this issue is the co-feature THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF WAYNE:  PT 1, reuniting Snyder with Rafael Albuquerque from their short time on DETECTIVE COMICS and featuring Jarvis Pennyworth.
"I hesitate as I write this, because the temptation to blame all that followed on Martha Wayne is incredibly powerful."

FATALE #5
The end to the first chapter of this series and another masterpiece by Ed Brubaker and Sean Philips.  Brubaker and Philips are quite honestly one of the best creative teams to have ever worked on comic books.  Their work and catalogue supports itself.  Cannot wait for chapter two.  Two of the hottest and most creative comics on the stands right now are from Image:  this book and THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS.
"But then the old man just starts laughing...  And not the right kind.  The kind that makes you want to burst your eardrums.  The kind you hear in your nightmares.  And I realize, that's all I've got."

STICK WITH IT

THE PUNISHER #5
Definite fill in issue, but even Rucka's fill in issues are great.  We're slowly being eased back into the Punisher existing in the Marvel U again with all the super baddies.  Love the two detectives Ozzy and Bolt being based the Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman characters from Seven.  Who would you want to deal with, the Punisher or Kevin Spacey's character in Seven?
"Wait, that's it?  Yep.  He just shot him dead?  He didn't wait to hear what Black Talon was saying?  He didn't wait to find out why he was doing this?  I don't think the Punisher cared, detective."

WHY'D I BUY THAT?

GREEN LANTERN #9
THE SECRET OF THE INDIGO TRIBE:  PT 3 - Is there a correlation between Geoff Johns becoming the Chief Creative Officer of DC and the decline of the quality in GL over the last year?  Loved BLACKEST NIGHT but 3 years after the fact Johns has lost my readership.  Why are we still dealing with BLACKEST NIGHT in the new 52?  This was supposed to be about new beginnings.  I won't be complaining anymore as this was the last GL title I will pick up until someone else takes creative control of the book.  All the other DC titles in the new 52 seem affected by the change over into a new continuity in good ways, except this book.  DC readers should be checking out Johns' SHAZAM co-feature in JL.  SHAZAM is Johns at his best.
