Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, I'M ONLY READING! RECAP OF NEW COMICS 05.22.2013

A store is on the way.  I can't wait to share with everyone what we have planned over the next couple of months.  Fingers crossed everything continues going according to plan.  Pretty big release week bringing some good reading to the world of comics.  Let's dig in!

BOUNCE #1 (MATURE CONTENT)
BY JOE CASEY & DAVID MESSINA
Joe Casey is a tour de force at the moment.  Actually he's always a tour de force.  On top of launching his controversial and dynamic series SEX, he's added another promising title to Image Comics' growing canon of ground breaking work.  The best and most innovative comics right now are not at the big 2.  They are being produced at Image Comics by the leading writers/artists in the industry and it's about time fans start supporting Image Comics more than just picking up the current issue of WALKING DEAD because you saw the T.V show.  Having given up on Marvel's convoluted and nonsensical attempts with what should be their premier character with Spidey, BOUNCE has made me fall in love with the Spidey archetype all over again.  This one issue is better than the last 200 issues of Spidey and with no continuity baggage.  THE BOUNCE:  a superhero, a stargate and a bong.  Keep it coming Joe.

OCCUPY COMICS #1
BY ALAN MOORE, ART SPIEGELMAN & OTHERS
Alan Moore, David Lloyd, Art Spiegelman, Molly Crabapple, Ben Templesmith, Charlie Adlard and other legends of the industry give us an informative take on the financial collapse and the resulting occupy movement.  Mainstream comics don't really comment on politics anymore but when they do we get the true purpose of comics, social commentary.  Alan Moore's essay about the history of comics is reason enough to pick up this issue on top of all the other amazing pieces.
"The publishers humbly put this book at the disposal of those who, in good faith might read, circulate, plagiarize, revise, and otherwise make use of it in the course of making the world a better place.  Possession, reproduction, transmission, excerpting, introduction as evidence in court and all other applications by any corporation, government body, security organization, or similar party of evil intent are strictly prohibited and punishable under natural law."

DAREDEVIL #26
BY MARK WAID & CHRIS SAMNEE
The best super-hero comic on the stands and a near perfect book.  From the writing of Mark Waid, to the illustrations and covers of Chris Samnee, the adventures of Matt Murdock have never been better.  One also has to wonder, with the stories Bendis, then Brubaker and now Waid have given us with the Man without Fear has the Daredevil writing over the last 8 years been equal or greater to the level of writing that Batman readers have been thrilled with during the same timeframe?  After Diggle's pointless SHAWOWLAND run on Daredevil this DD fan had given up and the best writing for DD was in the past with Miller, Bendis and Brubaker.  Then Waid takes the reigns and hits the ground running.  Time for a good Daredevil movie now!
