Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, I'M ONLY READING! RECAP NEW COMICS 04.03.2013

Saturday and Sunday's are when I usual get around to the Comic Pile.  So let's see what the week of 04.03.2013 brought to or left from the Pile, plus what comics really stood out.

Leaving the Comic Pile this week is Action Comics.  Andy Diggle and Tony Daniel have taken over Action Comics at #19 as Grant Morrison and Rags Morales completed their mind blowing run on Action Comics with the previous issue.  Wasn't willing to chance Diggle's run as Morrison's was near perfect and Diggle's run on Daredevil still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.  Hopefully we'll see more Superman from Morrison in the near future.  Here are the covers:

ACTION COMICS #18
FINAL GRANT MORRISON/RAGS MORALES
ACTION COMICS #19
NEW STORY ARC BY ANDY DIGGLE/TONY DANIEL

Being added to the Comic Pile this week is Kieron Gillen's super-powered WWII release by Avatar Press, Uber.  As the Allies close in on Berlin a defeated 3rd Reich unleashes it's Uber program into the theatre of war and tips the balance of power back to Germany.  This book is a strong mature read and reflects with honesty, the horrors associated with war and doesn't flinch.  You are not supposed to feel good about reading this comic.  Very reminiscent of Garth Ennis' honesty and integrity when writing war ficiton but with a super-powered twing.  Uber is a strong combination of Ennis's Battlefields and Boys.  Gillen has done his research and could become the next great war writer in comics.

UBER #0
BY KIERON GILLEN/CAANAN WHITE

Joining Uber in the Comic Pile this week is a new ltd series featuring the Mad Titan that appeared at the end of the Avenges movie, Thanos.  You know Marvel is really keen to push something when two amazing talents in writer Jason Aaron and artist Simone Bianchi are thrown at a project.  Will we finally be given the answers to how and why Thanos has returned from the Cancerverse (as seen in Annhilation/Thanos Imperative/Guardians of the Galaxy)?  There were hints left in the new Guardians of the Galaxy series that Thanos, Starlord and Nova escaped their prison at the end of the Thanos Imperative.  Marvel is finally doing their outer space sci-fi right.

THANOS RISING #1
BY JASON AARON/SIMONE BIANCHI

For the beginning of a month there were some surprising gems.  Earth 2 has long been frustrating as it is a fascinating book, but has a slow pace.  This is to change shortly beginning with Earth 2 #11 and the introduction of Dr. Fate to the DC New 52 as well as some 4th World characters.  Nicola Scott is quickly becoming one of DC's best talents and her world building artwork with DC vet writer James Robinson is really becoming something special.  Earth 2 will be a pivotal book for DC fans soon and the strong connection this book has to Jack Kirby's 4th World is why we can all be patient for the pay off.  Can't wait for Earth 2 characters to meet their Earth 1 counterparts in what I'm assuming will be the fight against Apokolips.  BTW these WTF covers are amazing!

EARTH 2 #11
BY JAMES ROBINSON/NICOLA SCOTT

Scott Snyder's run on Swamp Thing initially displayed such promise but became a disjointed Walking Dead wannabe with the Animal Man/Rotworld crossover.  New writer Charles Soule has picked up the existential dilemmas of Swamp Thing with issue #19, that were trodden down during Rotworld.  There seems to be direction here to get Swampy back to his roots yet again, and if Soule stays with the book we could be in store for some very important Swamp Thing stories.  Perfect jumping on point with very strong artwork from Kano.  Will Alec Holland finally find his place in the DCU?
