Comics: The Meaning

com-ics (kom'iks)n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

"If Comics' spectacularly varied past is any indication, comics' future will be virtually impossible to predict using the standards of the present.... Those of you who make comics for a living - or would like to someday, probably know that keeping up with all the advances in today's comics is a full-time job. However much we may try to understand the world of comics around us, a part of that world will always lie in shadow - a mystery.... As it is, it should be kept in mind at all times that this world is only one of many possible worlds!
Our attempts to define comics are an on-going process which won't end anytime soon. A new generation will no doubt reject whatever this one finally decides to accept and try once more to reinvent comics. And so they should. Here's to the great debate."

Excerpts and paraphrased from the amazing Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art."

TOP 10 - COMICS IN THE NEW DC 52, PT: 01

To celebrate DC's successful relaunch with their 52 #1s (some titles have gone to 4th printings and JL is the best selling comic in 15 years), here are my favourite DC 52 #1s.  Will wait a few months before doing a list of the top 10 DC titles and we'll see how some of these series have progressed or diminished after the first story arcs are over.  It needs to be said that comics are coming back to the mainstream in a massive way and DC has hit upon some great ideas to attract old and new fans alike.  Hopefully they will be able to have a good run.  But really the relaunch has been successful because of the writer and artist pairings DC editorial have sought out and been able to sign to these books.  Morales being paired with Morrison is SOOO GOOD and they should be able to have a longer run on Action Comics, than Grant might have been able to maintain with other artists he has worked with.  Hands down, Action Comics is the book that excites me the most.  It's starting off simple and rooted in Superman's original origin, but from what I've seen on the internet, it is going to become quite epic.  A lot of the titles ooze epic potential.  I love things when they are EPIC!
